SHIPWRECK AT LAMPEDUSA - THE ITALIAN AUTHORITIES REQUEST THAT COOPERATION IN THE FIELD OF MIGRATION BE STRENGTHENED WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION AND AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL.

The Embassy of Italy in Malta appreciates the declarations of solidarity expressed by the highest Authorities and by the Government of Malta following the enormous tragedy at Lampedusa (reference is made to the Press Release issued by the Department of Information).

Because of their position at the centre of the Mediterranean, Malta and Italy are particularly exposed to the pressure of migrants and asylum seekers, and both Countries would like to see a more effective common policy in the European Union.

As pointed out by the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano “in front of  a succession of true and real massacres of the innocents you cannot turn around the absolute need of decisions and actions by the international community and in the first place by the European Union”.

The Italian Prime Minister, the Honourable Letta has called for listening and allies in the European Union to ensure that Europe raises the level of its intervention and the effectiveness of its action with regard to the phenomenon of migration.

On his part the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs Alfano, delivering a speech in Parliament, has recalled that Lampedusa is Europe’s frontier and that an integrated strategy is necessary for the defence of Europe’s borders.

Even the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon Emma Bonino, hopes that “tragedies of this type will open the eyes of other Governments” to develop a common policy on immigration.

Since the beginning of this year Italian security forces have helped directly more than 30 thousand immigrants, very often near the coasts of other European Countries. It is important that Europe takes the necessary measures above all with regards to the strengthening of the FRONTEX system of air and sea vigilance of borders to immediately spot any landings or transits, as well as the issue of the Dublin Regulation.

Italy has asked that the meeting of the Council of Justice and Home Affairs of the 7th and 8th October at Luxembourg dedicates a session to the emergency at Lampedusa.

The 4th of October has been declared a day of national mourning in Italy.
